Malaysian author Tan Twan Eng wins Walter Scott Prize

Tan Twan EngMalaysian author Tan Twan Eng for his second novel, The Garden of Evening Mists £ 25,000 Walter Scott prize for historical fiction has won.

Earlier this year, Tan Twan Eng Man Asian Literary Prize won with this book.

Scott Award judges commented: "This year's shortlist is bright and all authors read in a way that brings lasting happiness personalities amazing books written in the lives of illuminating the times and BREATHING.

"However, we Evening Mists garden deep imprint left on the book.

"And forget the poignancy of what this book is all about."

One of the strengths of Walter Scott Prize for its "broad access" said.

"Matched set in the jungle-clad highlands, this year's winner of World War Two is troubled by us later," he added.

"This powerful and atmospheric, a rich, deep, layered and integrated views of the novel, and part again."

Melrose awards ceremony was presented by James Naughtie.

Earlier in the day, writers on July 4, following extensive refurbishment which reopens to the public visiting Scott's home, Abbotsford House opportunity.
